Mixed media - 2023
Sprung is a personal project, centred around the theme of spring, experimenting with the interaction of various techniques to create a visually captivating image.
The project begins with an exploration of distortions generated by a scanner, where I manually manipulated its sensor's movement as it captures a subject’s face, resulting in intriguing and unusual distortions that challenge perception.
To complement the distorted scans, I digitally hand-drew vines and floral patterns that organically wrap around the subject's face. The key challenge was to ensure that these elements appeared distinct from the scan while simultaneously integrating seamlessly with it. By treating the floral illustrations with a sense of realism, particularly in how they interact with the shadows and contours already present in the scan, I created a dynamic relationship between the two mediums. In the scan, areas of the face closer to the scanner's glass appear sharp and defined, while others, further away, blur naturally. I mirrored these imperfections in the vine illustrations, replicating the environment of the scan and enhancing the overall cohesion of the piece.
This project reflects my fascination with combining technical distortion and organic forms, achieving a delicate balance between chaos and control in the final composition.
